The personalized corkscrew, also called a waiter’s friend or sommelier depending on its shape, is a metal or composite accessory designed to extract cork or synthetic stoppers from bottles, particularly wine bottles, with personalization applied to the handle or lever without altering the essential mechanical functions. It consists of at least three articulated elements: a helical steel worm (or spiral) made of tempered steel, a lever (single or double hinge), and a handle that may also incorporate a foldable foil cutter. Classic sommelier-type models measure between 110 and 125 mm when closed, with a weight ranging from 70 to 120 g depending on the materials used: brushed stainless steel, anodized aluminum, ABS, natural or composite wood. The handle is the preferred area for personalization, with a flat surface of 50 to 60 × 10 to 15 mm, marked by pad printing, laser engraving (on metal or wood), or direct UV printing on plastic. Engraving is often preferred for durability reasons, especially on high-end versions in solid metal or treated wood.
The lever can be simple (single leverage effect, more compact) or double hinge, for a progressive extraction that reduces cork breakage. The worm is generally made of stainless steel coated with Teflon or titanium nitride for smooth penetration without crumbling the cork. It has 5 to 6 turns and measures about 45 mm, with a calibrated section to avoid widening or cracking thin necks. The foil cutters, on waiter’s friend models, are serrated and sharp, integrated as a foldable blade in the handle. Some models include a bottle opener function at the end of the lever or handle.
The packaging is done individually, in a cardboard box, a rigid case, or a faux leather pouch, with or without marking on the packaging. The marking should not interfere with handling, encroach on flex zones, or be located on hinges or grooves. The functional test includes the extraction of a standard cork in two steps, the lever's stability on a standard neck, the absence of play at the axes, and the cleanliness of the foil cut. A low-quality corkscrew often shows a handle that is too light, a marking that fades or chips, excessive play at the lever, or a worm that bends on the third use. Conversely, a good personalized corkscrew features a smooth mechanism, solid assemblies, a natural grip, well-centered, clear marking, resistant to humidity, friction, and service conditions, without compromising the tool's elegance or robustness.
