The personalized luggage tag is an identification accessory designed to be attached to a suitcase, travel bag, or carry-on luggage, allowing the owner's contact details to be inserted while providing an optimized, visible, and durable marking surface. It consists of two main elements: a main body, generally rigid or semi-rigid, and a fastening system (strap, buckle, cord, or silicone attachment), all designed to withstand the shocks, friction, and temperature variations encountered during airport transit. The most common materials are injected ABS plastic, soft PVC, food-grade silicone, anodized aluminum, or, more rarely, leather or faux leather for premium models. The standard format is rectangular, 85 to 100 mm long by 50 to 65 mm wide, with a thickness of 2 to 5 mm.
The identification window is either transparent (with an insertable printed card) or concealed (with a sliding flap or opaque cover), depending on the desired level of confidentiality. The marking is generally applied to the visible side of the luggage tag: by pad printing or screen printing for plastic, laser engraving for metal, UV printing for flat silicone models, or laminated adhesive label for irregular surfaces. The useful surface for customization varies from 40 × 20 mm to 60 × 35 mm depending on the model and the location of the text. Some models integrate a QR code or an NFC chip for digital identification, but the majority remain for manual use with fields for first name, address, phone number.
The attachment can be made by sliding loop, notched strap, elastic, or metal cable with locking screw, each tested to withstand a pull of 5 to 15 kg depending on the material and anchor point. Quality tests include the strength of the loop, the durability of the marking against dry and wet friction (300 simulated passes), the stability of the support (no warping or breaking at -10°C), the readability of the identification window, and resistance to common products (water, alcohol, sweat, oil). Packaging is done in an individual transparent bag, cardboard case, or box with foam padding for metal models. A low-end luggage tag often shows poorly finished seams, erasable marking, too flexible attachment, or a window that peels off. Conversely, a good personalized luggage tag attaches easily, stays in place even after a long-haul flight, keeps its marking sharp and readable despite handling, and ensures that the visual message—logo, text, or brand—remains associated with a reliable, practical, and durable product.
