The customized laser pointer is a visual signaling instrument used to precisely designate a point, area, or graphic element at a distance, using a concentrated light beam, usually red (wavelength around 650 nm), sometimes green (532 nm) for high-end models. It consists of a cylindrical body made of anodized metal (aluminum, brass, or stainless steel) or ABS plastic, an encapsulated laser diode, a focusing lens system, a regulation circuit board, a spring-loaded push button, and a compartment for batteries or a rechargeable battery. Its length varies from 9 to 15 cm with a diameter between 10 and 15 mm, weighing between 20 and 70 g depending on the material and power source. It may come with a pocket clip, key ring, or stylus tip for touch screens, but these functions must always be clearly separated from the optical mechanism.

Customization is applied on the barrel, on a flat surface 30 to 60 mm long and 5 to 10 mm high, either by monochrome pad printing or laser engraving on metal models, the latter offering better abrasion resistance and more durable contrast. The pointer is activated by simple continuous pressure or a lock button, with a battery life of 2 to 10 hours depending on the type of battery (AAA, AG13, CR2032) or integrated battery (Li-ion 150–300 mAh). The beam range is generally 100 to 500 meters for class 2 or 2M red lasers, up to more than 1,000 meters for class 3R green versions, never to be directed towards eyes or an audience.

The output lens is protected by a screwed or embedded ring, and the optical axis must be perfectly aligned to avoid deviation of the light spot. Professional versions sometimes integrate a voltage regulator to prevent intensity fluctuations. The body can be matte, glossy, or soft touch, and some models feature an LED indicator or charge indicator (for USB rechargeable versions). Quality tests focus on beam stability (circular shape without halo), mechanical resistance to pressure (300 cycles), readability of the marking after handling, power retention (no loss of power during 1 minute of continuous use), and absence of overheating after 15 minutes of use in sequences.

Packaging is individual, in a rigid case, cardboard box with foam padding, or faux leather pouch, with or without batteries included. A poorly designed laser pointer shows a blurry or double point, erasable marking, random activation, or rapid button wear. A good customized pointer, on the other hand, fits well in the hand, activates effortlessly, remains stable over time, displays clear, centered, durable marking, perfectly visible without compromising readability or safety, and enhances the perceived reliability of the visual message with each use in class, training, or presentation.
