The custom folder, sometimes called a document protector when it is designed to hold A4 or A5 sheets in a stable and readable manner, is a flexible or semi-rigid support designed to contain, protect, and organize paper documents while providing a clearly defined marking surface used to affix a logo, text, or visual identity. It is generally made of polypropylene (PP) 180 to 400 microns, welded soft PVC, laminated cardboard, or coated canvas, with finishes that vary according to the expected level of quality. The standard format is 31 × 22 cm for A4 documents, with a closure by flap, snap button, scratch, zip, or simple inner flap. Models with elastic are reinforced at the corners, with or without a side gusset (from 0.5 to 3 cm), while single-pocket versions allow quick viewing of the content.

Marking is done by screen printing in one or two colors, direct UV four-color printing, or applying a laminated adhesive label on the front. The usable surface for customization is generally between 80 × 50 mm and 150 × 100 mm, depending on the configuration of the front face. On transparent or translucent models, color contrast is crucial to ensure good readability; on opaque or colored folders, printing requires covering inks resistant to friction. High-end versions in rigid polypropylene sometimes incorporate a label holder, a business card slot, or even a dry-erase writing area. Welds should be regular, the corners rounded to avoid snagging, and the flaps sufficiently adjusted to keep the sheets in place without marking them.

Quality tests include: the durability of the marking after 200 openings/closings, dimensional stability (no warping), tear resistance at the welds or eyelets, and compatibility with printers or scanners when the folder is used in an office environment. Packaging is individual in a bag or grouped in batches, flat, in boxes of 100 to 250 units. A poor document protector shows imprecise welds, blurry or poorly centered marking, material that wrinkles in heat or leaves a residue to the touch. Conversely, a good custom folder remains flat, flexible yet firm, accommodates documents without creasing them, retains its integrity over time, and allows a clear, sober, and professional enhancement of the applied graphic identity.
