The customized cardboard cup meets specific usage constraints: it must hold a hot or cold beverage without leaking, softening, or altering the taste. It is made from food-grade cardboard, typically 280 to 350 g/m², coated with a thin inner film – of traditional PE, compostable PLA bioplastic, or without plastic layer depending on the standards targeted – whose role is to prevent liquid absorption. Its flared and stable shape fits standardized templates: 4 oz (12 cl), 8 oz (24 cl), 12 oz (35 cl), 16 oz (47 cl), or even 20 oz (60 cl), each intended for a specific use, from a strong coffee to a large latte or a soda to go. The cardboard cup is not just a container: it is a graphic medium wrapped around itself, with a message that must remain readable no matter how it is held. Printing is done in flexography, offset, or UV digital printing, depending on the quantities and the level of detail expected. Each surface is calibrated for a sharp rendering, even on curved areas, with precision on the lateral junction, which should not interrupt important visuals. The marking can include a logo, a color chart, a pictogram, regulatory text, sometimes a white area to write a name, or sorting pictograms. The promotional cardboard cup is often accompanied by a PLA or recyclable plastic lid, and sometimes a protective sleeve if the cardboard is single-walled, to avoid burning on contact. One can also opt for a double wall, where air between the two layers acts as an insulator, without the addition of extra materials. Some models are microwaveable, others designed for takeaway sales only. The bottom of the cup, sealed by a circular fold and a coating layer, must ensure perfect watertightness, tested hot and cold, without seepage or deformation. Manufacturing meets strict standards: food contact, migration, possible compostability, FSC or PEFC certification of the paper used. Unlike a plastic cup, this one deforms more easily under hand pressure, hence the importance of the grammage choice. Storage also requires precautions: stacked, the cups must retain their rigidity, be protected from moisture, delivered under film, sometimes with quality control printed on the bottom. Used in trade shows, coffee chains, service areas, offices, or institutional events, the cardboard cup becomes a discreet yet omnipresent graphic vector, always linked to a moment of pause or transition. It is an object that is thrown away, yes, but after being looked at, touched, drunk, sometimes even held in hand for a few minutes. Its impact does not lie in its lifespan, but in its quick, repeated use, and its ability to convey a clear, visible message consistent with the brand's universe.
